A complete technical SEO audit guide — Core Web Vitals, site speed, crawlability, indexing, and structured data fixes that boost rankings.

Technical SEO is the foundation everything else is built on. Excellent content and great backlinks can't compensate for a site that Google can't properly crawl, index, or understand. Run through this checklist systematically and eliminate technical barriers to ranking.

Crawlability & Indexation

Crawlability
  • Check robots.txt — ensure important pages aren't accidentally blocked
  • Review XML sitemap — all important pages included, no error pages
  • Check Google Search Console Coverage report for indexing errors
  • Ensure no important pages have noindex tags accidentally
  • Verify crawl budget isn't being wasted on low-value pages

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are now a direct ranking factor. Check your scores in Google Search Console's Core Web Vitals report or PageSpeed Insights:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — Target under 2.5 seconds. Fix by optimizing hero images, using a CDN, and improving server response time
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — Target under 200ms. Fix by reducing JavaScript execution time and breaking up long tasks
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — Target under 0.1. Fix by specifying image dimensions and avoiding dynamically injected content above existing content

HTTPS & Security

HTTPS Security

Ensure your entire site is served over HTTPS. Check for mixed content warnings (HTTP resources loading on HTTPS pages). Verify your SSL certificate hasn't expired. Implement proper HTTPS redirects from HTTP versions.

Site Architecture & Internal Linking

  • No important page should be more than 3 clicks from the homepage
  • Use descriptive, keyword-rich anchor text for internal links
  • Ensure every page receives at least one internal link
  • Fix or redirect all broken internal links
  • Implement breadcrumb navigation on deep pages

URL Structure

URLs should be short, descriptive, and include the target keyword. Use hyphens (not underscores) to separate words. Avoid parameters and numbers in URLs where possible. Ensure there are no duplicate content issues from URL variations (www/non-www, trailing slashes).

Structured Data (Schema Markup)

Structured data helps Google understand your content and can earn rich results in search (star ratings, FAQs, breadcrumbs). Implement relevant schema types: Article, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQ, HowTo. Test implementation with Google's Rich Results Test tool.

Technical SEO is the work that's invisible when done well and catastrophic when neglected. A solid technical foundation ensures that every content and link building effort delivers its full potential value.
